SOLAR SERVICES FAQ

Home solar and battery-backup questions, answered.

Explore costs, electricity plans, equipment, backup and the details to verify for your property.

01

Use your electricity bills as the starting point

Solar estimates are only useful when their assumptions fit the property. Bring questions about usage, equipment and what you want the project to accomplish, then ask how each part of a proposal supports that goal.

02

Separate estimates from guarantees

Generation estimates, backup coverage, warranties and financial projections describe different things. Ask for each in writing and identify the conditions that apply instead of combining them into a broad promise of independence or savings.

03

Confirm current electricity-plan and incentive terms

Electricity-plan offers, export terms and incentives can change. Confirm the current terms for the property with the responsible provider or qualified adviser before making them part of the project budget.

GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions, answered.

How can solar affect a home’s environmental footprint?

Panels generate electricity from sunlight without combustion at the point of generation. The effect of a project depends on the electricity it replaces, its performance and its full lifecycle. The solar team can discuss the system’s expected generation without treating every installation as having the same impact.

What financial benefits should I evaluate?

Compare the full installed and financed cost with an estimate of the grid electricity your system could replace. Include ongoing charges, equipment assumptions and confirmed program benefits. Savings and payback depend on your home, usage, electricity plan and project terms.

What makes up my existing electricity bill?

Bring a recent bill so the team can separate electricity usage from the rate structure, delivery charges and other applicable items. Solar generation does not necessarily remove every charge.

Will I still receive an electricity bill?

A grid-connected solar household may still purchase electricity and pay applicable charges. The result depends on generation, when energy is used, the electricity plan and any export or credit arrangement. Ask for a model based on your own bill.

How should I handle homeowners insurance?

Ask your insurer how the proposed equipment would be covered, whether policy limits or premiums would change and which installation information they require. The solar consultation does not replace confirmation from your insurance provider.

Can exported electricity earn a payment or credit?

That depends on the utility or retail electricity plan and the terms available to the property. Confirm eligibility, metering requirements, export rates and fees in the applicable agreement before including a payment or credit in a financial estimate.

Will panels increase my property value?

A sale outcome cannot be guaranteed. Ownership terms, financing, equipment condition and the local market can affect a buyer’s decision. Discuss the proposed arrangement with the relevant property and finance professionals if resale is a key concern.

What should I know about solar tax incentives?

Ask for the exact incentive program being discussed and confirm its current availability and eligibility requirements with a qualified tax professional. Do not count an incentive toward the project budget until you understand whether it applies to you.

Can a battery be paired with a solar system?

Yes, a compatible design can combine panels and storage. The proposal needs to identify the equipment, charging arrangement, usable capacity and loads the battery is intended to support. Explore the battery-backup page for the questions to bring to your consultation.

How long will the panels last?

Expected service life and warranty coverage depend on the selected equipment and its terms. Request the proposed manufacturer’s product and performance warranties and ask how gradual changes in output are accounted for in the estimate.

What maintenance will the system need?

Follow the selected equipment’s care requirements and the installer’s guidance. Ask about monitoring, access, cleaning needs where appropriate and who handles service. Avoid assuming every roof or installation needs the same schedule.

When should I arrange an inspection?

Ask the installer for an inspection and service plan appropriate to your equipment and property. Confirm what to do after damage, a fault or a material change in performance, and which service intervals apply to your system.

Will solar keep my home running during an outage?

Do not assume panels alone provide backup power. Outage operation requires an appropriate system design and compatible equipment. Ask which circuits or appliances the proposed configuration supports and how storage capacity and demand affect runtime.

What happens when there is little or no sunlight?

Generation changes with available sunlight and site conditions. Panels do not produce solar electricity at night. Depending on the configuration, electricity then comes from the grid, stored energy or another supply; ask how the proposed design handles your usage pattern.
